Gregorio Fuentes was born on Lanzarote in the Canary Island in 1897, was the first mate of the Pilar. He was married to Dolorez Perez in 1920.

He worked as a fisherman in the boat belongs to Ernest Hemingway, an American writer. At 10 of his age, he will go along with his father as a deck boy and worked on those cargo ships to and fro to Canary Island. He was credited as a model for Hemingway’s finest novel in “THE OLD MAN AND THE SEA”, published in 1952. The story narrates the struggle of a loyal man who goes out too far in search of his prey and pays a good price. Fuentes died at (age) 104 in the year 2002 due to cancer. And, he never read the novel.
