The music of the song that the girl sang is still echoing in my mind. Truly, music has a divine quality that leaves a lasting effect on us. Would I have noticed the girl if she were not singing. Certainly not. The song was in Scottish dialect, so I could not understand what she was singing. I was totally mesmerized by the song and thought whether I should stop there or gently pass, so as not to disturb the girl. She was busy reaping and singing to her pleasure. I tried to guess what the song was about. It could be about some old, sorrowful incident or battles fought long ago. It could also be about any natural disaster which struck in the past and may strike again. Or it could even be about mundane matters of day-to-day life. Whatever the song was it seemed non-ending as it reverberated with all its melody and charm. And when I climbed uphill, the song still echoed in my heart; such was the effect of that melodious song.
It is so true that poetry is 'powerful spontaneous overflow of emotions recollected in tranquility, for when I sat in solitude, the poem originated as I recalled my experience.

The poet happens to hear a reaper singing a sad song while she is working in the fields. Her voice resonated throughout the valley and was sweeter than the nightingale or the cuckoo. As he did not know her language, the poet was not able to understand what she was singing.

As he wished for someone who could tell him what she sang, he wondered if it was a story of some battle fought in the past or a song of loss or pain. Whatever it is, the song made a deep impact in his mind that the poet could feel it resonating inside him for a long time.
