This year I spent my Durga Puja in Kolkata at my grandfather home. This was the first time when I was witnessing the biggest festival of Bengalis in Kolkata. The trip was very short just for 2 days but enough to enjoy the celebrations. I always enjoy Durga Puja at my Home town Delhi but can’t compare the Pujas of Kolkata and Delhi because both have their own charm. Durga puja in Kolkata is totally different from Delhi. In Kolkata Durga puja is celebrated in every nook and corner, sometimes even on the main road. Puja in Kolkata is a creative expression for the artists. The entire city looks like a huge exhibition of installations. Each better than the other. The huge and artistic pandals, magnificient idols of goddess Durga, people dancing on the beats of Dhaki (drum) and evenings surrounded with the divine tunes of Goddess Durga aarti are the unforgettable features of Kolkata Durga Puja celebration.
Whole environment is dazzling with a fire, holy water, burning of incense, beating of drums, and ringing of bells. Kolkata women are looking beautiful in their traditional saris and dresses and all men are looking handsome in their traditional Bengali dhoti kurta. Idol of Maa durga and Lakshmi, Saraswati with Ganesha and Kartikeya, who are considered to be Durga’s children are looking beautiful. I enjoyed delicious bhog followed by the delicious vegetarian meal on the rooftop of my grandfather home. Now it was time to say good bye this wonderful city and grandparents so with heavy hearts we left for Kolkata airport to catch our flight to Delhi.

The day before yesterday was Durga Puja. It is one of the important festivals celebrated in India. The festival is celebrated on the tenth day from the Hindi calendar of Ashvin. It is also known as Vijaydashmi. It is said that on this day Goddess Durga got victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. She killed the demon in order to establish peace and harmony among the people. The day is also celebrated as Lord Rama attaining victory over the evil Ravana. This festival is symbolic of the winning of the good over the evil. I celebrated this Dussehra with my friends at my place. They all came to my house and we went to see the puja pandals together. We ate ice-creams and many other stuffs. Also we enjoyed many rides in the fair. This was the most enjoyable Dussehra.
