Last week, we had been to Gujarat on an educational tour. Among other places, there was one which stood out for all of us. The Modhera Sun Temple of Mehsana, Gujarat, stunned us with its magnificence.
Built by King Bhima 1 of the Chalukya dynasty in the early 11th century, its structure, the precision with which it was built, the sheer beauty of the sculptures and carvings are something which cannot be emulated.
The temple has been built in such a way that during an equinox, the first rays of the sun will shine on a diamond on the Sun God’s head and illuminate the entire place. On other days, two pillars in front of the Garbagraha will receive the sunrays and remain illuminated throughout the day.
It is a matter of pride and awe that our ancestors were able to measure and calculate with great precision and build these amazing temples. The sad thing is that today what remains of this beautiful temple is only the ruins after Muhammed Ghazni plundered the temple all those years ago.
It has been declared a Heritage site by the UNESCO.
I must say this has been one enjoyable educational tour and we look forward to visiting such places again.
