Makar Sankranti or Uttarayan or Maghi or simply Sankranti, is a festival day in the Hindu calendar, dedicated to the deity Surya (sun).

India is the land of festivals.The festival is celebrated every year on 14 or 15 January depending upon the solar cycle. They celebrate by taking an early morning holy dip in the river and offering prayers to the sun because according to Hindu mythology sun is one of the many God.

Referred to as Uttarayan in Gujarat, the people celebrate this festival by flying kites and giving gifts to young members in the families. In West Bengal, Makar Sankranti is celebrated as Poush Parbon. On this day, people take a holy bath early in the morning and donate til seeds to the poor and the needy.
