i) KULAKS were the group of comparatively prosperous farmers in the later part of the Russian Empire, and the early Soviet Union. They were the peasants with large farms, several horses and cattle and the ability to employ hired labor. Kulaks and their families were imprisoned and executed en masse, during the 1930s.

ii) THE DUMA (дума) is a Russian assembly with advisory or legislative functions. The term comes from the Russian verb думать (dumat') meaning "to think" or "to consider". The first formally constituted duma was the Imperial State Duma introduced to the Russian Empire by Emperor Nicholas II in 1905.

iii) WOMEN WORKERS B/W 1900 & 1930 Woman made-up 31 per cent of the factory labour force by 1914, but they were paid less than men. (ii) Women were also involved in strikes. For example lockout on 22 February was largely organized by women-workers they also worked in state controlled collective farms.

iv) THE LIBERALS wanted a change in the society. They wanted toleration towards all religions. They opposed the uncontrolled power of dynastic rulers. They wanted to safeguard the rights of individuals.

They favoured a representative, elected parliamentary government. Such a government should be subject to laws interpreted by a well- trained and independent judiciary.

However, some of the liberal ideas were not democratic. They did not believe in universal adult franchise and wanted the voting rights only for men with property.

v) STALIN'S COLLECTIVISATION PROGRAMME The collectivisation programme was started by Stalin. Under this programme, small landholdings of many peasants into one collective large farm. All large collectivised farms were cultivated by the farmers with the help of tools pooled together. The profits of the farms were shared among the cultivators.
