Sir — The sudden flash flood in Uttarakhand took hundreds of lives and left thousands stranded (“Rain rage wrecks hill states” June 18). The incessant rain triggered massive landslides and the river water washed away buildings and shops. The devastation is so extensive that the state administrations of Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh are still struggling to come to terms with the situation. The army, the Indo-Tibetan Border Police and paratroopers have joined hands in trying to rescue the people who are stranded in various parts of Uttarakhand. The shortage of food and drinking water is a cause of concern for the state government. The army is trying to arrange food and medicines for the people stranded in the Kedarnath, Badrinath and Gaurikund areas.
Although on the face of it the floods look like a natural calamity, environmentalists have called it a man-made disaster. Unchecked deforestation, illegal constructions and, in general, the reckless assault on nature are the chief reasons behind the tragedy. This incident should serve as a warning for all those who despoil nature, unmindful of the consequences. The state administrations should take steps to check the widespread destruction of waterbodies and forests.
Yours faithfully,
