Dear Editor,
The Indian economy has undergone a paradigm shift in the past few decades. One debate that rages is which of the two major sectors, agriculture or manufacturing should be assigned the higher priority. It is difficult to choose one over the other. Agriculture is important since you need food to feed the over 1.3 billion strong population. You don’t want to go back to the days when India imported wheat and other food grains due to drought and other causes. But India’s farmers have come to rely too much on the government from farm loans, fertilizers and irrigation to proper pricing for their produce. And there is no instant solution to this sector.
The manufacturing sector, on the other hand, has a huge potential from many perspectives but again, the government has to fine-tune some of its policies to make promoters of industries feel comfortable doing what they are engaged in. If the recent developments in the mobile phone manufacturing is anything to go by, there is no reason why India can embrace both manufacturing and service industries with both hands and emerge a strong economy in the future.
