Answer:
Dear Santa Claus, the letter begins.
I’m writing you this letter because I won’t be able to see you because of Covid-19. This year I learned a lot about the meaning of family.
This year I lost my baby cousin ... in February. Then Covid-19 happened and lots of people were dying and lots of families were sad. This year I learned what Christmas is all about. It is not about presents and gifts. It is about family, joy and spending time with loved ones.
The letter, written by an 8-year-old girl from Tucson, is one of thousands addressed to Kris Kringle that arrive at the post office in Santa Claus, Ind. For decades, volunteers have sifted through the letters and written personal responses to children from around the world who have written to Santa in German, French, Spanish and Russian — just to name a few. Excerpts included in this article have been edited for spelling, grammar and clarity.
Pat Koch, founder of the Santa Claus Museum and “Chief Elf,” said volunteers respond to about 20,000 each year and, although there had been a drop-off early in the season, mail was starting to pile up. As of Dec. 11, the team had responded to about 9,000 letters.
“These children are well aware of the coronavirus,” she said, “and they are very worried about Santa Claus being safe, and the elves being safe and Mrs. Claus being safe.”
Some of the children tell Santa they’ve been doing school from home for months because of the virus. Others are saying Mom or Dad isn’t working anymore. Some are saying they’re trying really hard to get along with their siblings, but they miss being able to see their friends. Some are just writing to say they hope he’s been wearing a mask and washes his hands between houses this year.
“The virus is affecting the children,” she said. “It really is.”
