Sir,
Diwali is a festival of light and joy. But this doesn't mean that it should be celebrated in a noisy way. Year after year thousands of rupees are wasted on crackers and fireworks. During the Diwali week there is an incessant noise lasting from dawn to midnight. The deafening noise made by powerful crackers and 'atom bombs' frightens young children and adversely affects the sick. It makes it difficult for many people to sleep peacefully at night.
It is high time we stopped this practice of celebrating Diwali in a noisy manner. The Government should ban the use of atom bombs' during Diwali.

Subject: The harmful effects of bursting crackers during festivals.
Sir,
Through the columns of your esteemed newspaper I wish to highlight the harmful effects of bursting crackers.
Bursting crackers during festivals like Diwali and special occasions seems to have become a normal practice. The Supreme Court passed a verdict that only environmental friendly lightings or green crackers will be allowed. But people are ignoring both the law and the consequences of bursting crackers. Festivals are a part of our social life. It brings people together to celebrate with joy. Festivals are good for us but the manner in which they are celebrated is wrong. Some of the harmful effects of crackers are given below.
- When bursting crackers, the smoke of hazardous gasses are released and pollute the air. Sulphur nitrates, magnesium, nitrogen dioxide are involved in the making of crackers. These are hazardous for our respiratory systems and cause respiratory diseases.
- Children are more vulnerable to the toxic substances of crackers and air pollution.
- During Diwali Festival excessive bursting of crackers results in thick smog in many cities. This last for several weeks and caused breathing problems to the people. Many are hospitalised. Road accidents occurred due to poor visibility because of air pollution. Many flights are cancelled.
- The levels of pollutants in the air increase to unprecedented levels in the air during firework displays.
- The hazardous pollutants of crackers cause the dead of birds and animals.
- Apart from the pollution of the air, crackers pollute our environment with noise pollution. Noise pollution causes irritation, headache and hearing impairment.
- cause serious ailments like asthma, lung cancer, shortness of breath, and many other diseases.
- A huge amount of money is spend on crackers. This all goes up in smoke uselessly. It is a mindless wastage of money. The money can be used for positive humanitarian works.
- The conditions of people already suffering from respiratory problems get worsened.
- The bursting of crackers causes littering and make our surrounding unclean.
- The loud bursting sound can be traumatic to our pets and other animals.
The manufacturing and sale of crackers must be banned completely. Let us all take a pledge not to use crackers for any purpose. Without demand, the manufacturing industries will be compelled to close down. Together we can make a difference in keeping our environment healthy and safe.
