While growing up in a rural town, tobacco products, such as chewing tobacco are well known in the area. At the age of 18, you can legally buy tobacco products. According to mentalhealthdaily.com, “someone who is 18 may make riskier decisions rather than someone in their mid-20s, primarily due to an underdeveloped brain.” Therefore, someone at the age of 18 would be more likely to give in to an adolescent if they were asking them to purchase tobacco products for them.
About 7.4 percent of middle school students and about 25.3 percent of high school students use tobacco products as stated on cdc.gov. People that are under the age of 18 are more apt to use tobacco products if they have a resource. Their resource of tobacco would be limited if the tobacco age was raised to 21. As said on tobacco21.org, “If the tobacco age was 21, it would put legal tobacco purchasers outside of the social circle of most high school students. Less people would have tobacco easily accessible to them if the legal age to buy tobacco was 21.
