The Editor,

Sir,

With due respect, I wish to draw kind attention of the concerned authority and general public through your esteemed daily, towards increasing incidents of road accidents.

Road accidents are a frequent feature of newspapers. Road accidents are on a rise especially in big cities. In rural areas, road accidents may have different causes like poor road conditions but in cities there is one reason which is the most critical one. This is reckless driving and most of the road accidents are result of reckless driving.

Persons sitting on steering do not have control over it. They do not have any regard for the traffic rules. Over-speeding, jumping red lights, overtaking from wrong side are commonplace. In most of the cases they escape unpunished due to their social status and corrupt bureaucracy.

Every year, large numbers of people die in road accidents. It is one of the biggest reasons of unnatural deaths in India. In the past fifty years, more persons succumbed to death due to road accidents than in wars with our enemy countries. So the time has come to develop a movement against reckless driving.

I hope, civic authorities and civilized people will pay heed to my prayer.

Yours faithfully,

Subject: The danger of rash and reckless driving.

Sir,

Through the columns of your esteemed and widely read national newspaper, I wish to highlight the increasing numbers of road accidents due to reckless driving.

Road accidents are increasing due reckless driving by adults as well as youngsters and minors which causes accidents and results in injuries and lost of life.

Traffic rules prohibit driving by underaged children, overspeeding, driving on the wrong lane, parking in no parking zones, bikers without helmet, car drivers without driving license or without seat belts, driving under influence of intoxicants, etc. The penalties to the defaulters are clearly defined. It can be a fine or imprisonment or both. Overspeeding and ignoring traffic lights and driving under the influence of alcohol must be viewed seriously. There are several hit and run cases everyday. Reckless drivers hit other vehicles or pedestrians, the people walking on foot and the drivers fled from the scene with the victims bleeding, screaming in pain and calling for help. Those driving above the speed limits must be given exemplary punishments for neglecting rules and regulations of public roads. They are a menace and highly dangerous to public safety. Our traffic personnel must do their best to book them under relevant laws.

Parents too have a major role to play in the prevention of reckless driving and the potential outcome. They must never allow their underaged or children without proper training and driving license to drive.

I think it is high time for us to impose heavier penalties on the offenders to deter rash and reckless driving.

Our traffic control personnel must be increased. Population and vehicle users are growing rapidly but the number of traffic police has more or less remained the same. Hence the need to recruit more traffic police.

It is also necessary to introduce road safety lessons in the text books of schools and colleges. Students must be taught the necessity of safe driving and learn to honour the sanctity of human life.

Further, no driving license should be issued to minors. No license should be given to anyone until they have passed from driving schools with satisfactory performance.

A reckless and irresponsible driver endangers his own life, the life of other drivers as well as passengers and pedestrians. It is heartbreaking to see any young person whose life is cut short because reckless driving. We must remember that it is better to drive safely and reach home alive.

Yours sincerely

JOYDEEP
