Dear Letters Editor

Many of us were alarmed a few years ago when BSE and foot-and-mouth exposed the terrible problems of modern farming but as these stories have fallen out of the headlines, it’s easy to forget that those problems are still there.

BSE is still being diagnosed in hundreds of British cattle every year and people are still falling ill with vCJD. BSE is now found in 24 countries and scientists fear that others may harbour it but their Governments are unwilling to admit it. Here in Britain, farmed animals still suffer from disease on a huge scale. Half of pig carcases show signs of pneumonia; over a million sheep suffer from maggot infestation; around a million cattle suffer from mastitis and – incredibly – 100,000 chickens die of disease on factory farms every day.

With animals so sick, it’s little wonder that food poisoning from meat and animal products makes millions ill and kills hundreds each year. The fact is, farmers’ pursuit of profit and the government’s unwillingness to take action threaten our health. We all remember how the Government and the meat industry assured us beef was safe at the start of BSE: are we really going to put our faith in them again?

Luckily, each of us has the power to do something about this. By becoming vegetarian we slash the risk to our own health and help animals in the process. For more information about going veggie or the risks of meat, contact Viva! at 8 York Court, Wilder St, Bristol BS2 8QH, tel 0117 944 1000.

Yours sincerely
