Dear Mike
It's my pleasure to give you information about great Indian bustard since you want it for your project. There was a time when great Indian bustard was found throughout the Western India, in almost eleven states, but now they are confined to Rajasthan and Gujrat. A small population occurs in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Bustards generally favor flat open landscapes with minimal visual obstruction and disturbance. Therefore, during breeding season they abound in grassland and in the nonbreeding season they frequent wide agro-grass scrub landscapes. It can be easily spotted by its black crown on its forehead contrasting with the pale neck and head. It has a brownish body and its wings are marked with black, brown and gray.
The males have a gular pouch which helps produce a resonant booming mating call to attract females and it can be heard up to a distance of 500 meters. The female lays a single eff on open ground and the responsibility of incubation is entirely on the female. She takes care of the young ones until the next breeding season. It's sad that the bird faces the threats of hunting, poaching, electric poles and habitat loss. However, WWF-India is contributing to protecting the GIB in and around Desert National Park and in future it plans to extend it in Gujrat.
Hope this information will help you in your project. Once you complete your project, send me a picture of it. If you want pictures also, please let me know.
Now I close my letter with a wish to hear from you.
