Hi Sathidey,

Nice hearing from you, I'm glad to hear you're getting by okay in these grim times.

You asked how’s it going for us back here in New Zealand.

You would have heard that the whole country is locked down and with breaks for exercise and shopping, we’re all living under a sort of voluntary house arrest.

The start of the lock down triggered in me an old feeling from past years.

From those car assembly strikes we took back in the ‘70s. The feeling at the strike’s onset; after our vote to stop, the conflicting feelings, the element of excitement, dare I say it, of fun. The usual boring routine suddenly wiped away, all of us together on the brink of an adventure, with a strong sense of collective purpose. A feeling of being vibrantly alive.

So the authorities here have chosen to impose a lockdown, to try and break the chain, a strategy which so far seems to make sense.

It’s been quite a ride and we’ve found out some interesting things, even after just three days.

It’s possible to get by without organised sports, Friday drinks,Sunday drives, restaurant dinners, trips to the Op shop. We are apparently quite able to live without the TAB, without McDonalds, without prostitution.

Some of us are much better placed than others. Despite government relief measures, thousands of workers will be struggling desperately. Some will lose their homes, many workers won’t get their jobs back.

The situation in some deprived overcrowded New Zealand homes right now doesn’t bear thinking about and its still just early days under lockdown.

At the moment there’s understandable faith in the authorities line of march and positive response to the Prime minister’s injunction for everyone to be “kind to each other”. Some people angrily dismiss any questioning of our government over this.

I think at such a time we need our critical faculties more than ever. As my friend Renée Anna put it:

“The state is made up of a network of institutions and those institutions are simply not basically “nice.” Asking questions about the response also does not amount to minimising the threat that COVID-19 represents or thinking it is a conspiracy, or even that it’s being purposefully exploited right at the moment or whatever.

Today the working class is in from the margins, it’s value strongly apparent.

When we get through the present stage of the drama, will these realisations translate into a revived socialist current? During the last few weeks, the capitalist class has shown they can make radical decisions. I’m hopeful that our side can too.

Best to your and yours,

Monika.

Dear friend (name)
I hope this letter finds you in the pink of health. It has been long since we wrote to each other. I hope you and your parents are doing fine in this covid pandemic time.
I am writing this letter to share my experience during lockdown. I was very happy in beginning of march before my preparation of annual exam was going very well . And this year also i was excited to win the best student of the year . But all my dreams and expectations checked ( blocked here ) by this pandemic- the covid 19 . The world is stopped under the fear of this giant life threat on human race . The lockdown imposed by our prime minister for our safety . We all were living like home arrest . But on other hand we felt lucky also that God almighty blessed with good health and we all were fine . All day we used to prayer for human race that we all be fine at the end of this pandemic. I and my family share food n essentials to needy ! We followed all precautionary advised by WHO . Though it was a tough time but still we enjoyed family time together! We had enjoyed home-cooked foods and played various indoor games
. We realised Yoga and Ayurveda can build a strong immunity system of our body . In future also i will continue this good habit of hygiene and yoga .
I wish you will try to practice these good habits too .
I am thankful to our teachers who helped us on online classes . It is tough time to everyone too . But” time is slipping away in same pace for everyone we cannot hold the time but we can manage our energy to accordingly” so we should always prepared ourselves with positivities
Convey my best wishes to Uncle and Aunt and lots of love to you and blessing to younger sister .
Looking forward to hear from you

Your lovingly
