LETTER TO FRIEND NARRATING EXPERIENCE IN RESCUE OPERATION:

#26 Marconi Street

Chennai

27September 2019

Dear Sumitha

I am in the best of health and spirits and hope the same for you. It has been a long time since we shared something interesting. Life is so hectic these days .I told you that I have joined the Emergency Task Force as a commando and to tell you the truth, I am enjoying each and every moment of it. The job is not only lucrative but is also quite satisfying. It gives you a sense of pride saving lives and watching the families of the distressed victims swell with joy the moment they see their near and dear ones back to safety. You have always been badgering me to narrate incidents of bravery where I emerged a saviour. So I thought to grant your wish this time.

You must have heard the news of the Pune deluge making headlines last month. We were asked to save residents of an area trapped in their houses, sitting on rooftops as water had entered their homes .With all mobile networks shut and no food or electricity, life was sheer hell for them. It was only after the Prime Minister’s appeal that plans were put into action. We got down the helicopters landing on life saving boats to be used to rescue those under direst stress. Each of us was carrying a load of at least three kilograms in our backpacks full of food and water supplies, medicines, first aid kits, torches and other necessities. Each boat carried four of us. We were twenty trained women on the job.

The weather was furious. It was raining cats and dogs. The whole area was inundated. Nothing was visible- no drains, no roads, just nothing. Rain was battering us. Wearing our life- saving jackets and helmets, we entered the area. When we reached the depressed lot, they were more than happy. It was not difficult reaching rooftops because of the rising water levels. We helped them get on the boats, children, women and men. Male chauvinists must have had a bad day watching us working heroically. We managed to save hundred lives, took them to a rescue shelter and made them feel warm and cosy. I can’t tell you how wonderful I felt.

The Prime Minister sent our team a special ‘thank you note ‘and certificates of commendation. I got both framed and have kept them in my living room among other awards. I will show you when we meet. So this was an ordeal to remember, but surely a memorable one. As they say, all is well that ends well.  Talks are on to felicitate us on the Independence Day next year. Keeping our fingers crossed!

Hope you enjoyed my exceptional narration.

Looking forward to see you soon.

Yours lovingly

Supriya
