Eating Out:

In the last twenty years, the proportion of Australians eating out on a regular basis has increased dramatically. This has given rise to a recent consumer demand for "healthy" menu options. Investigate the significance of this situation and the response to this demand by the industry (or sector) to satisfy client needs. Make recommendations for the industry so as to cater for consumer demands in this area.

Over the past twenty years the number of Australians eating out on a regular basis has increased dramatically. This has given rise to a recent consumer demand for "healthy" menu options. This rapid increase in people eating out has influenced fast food restaurants to not only serve their regular greasy foods but also healthy alternatives. This report is going to look at the increasing trends of healthy menu options.

Statistics show that one in three people eat a meal out every day (www.abs.gov.au). There are many reasons for these statistics. The first reason, according to the Author of the Australian Food- service Market (1994-96) Dr. Sandro Mangosi, is that families just don't have as much time as they used to have to prepare meals, and both partners are working.

Twenty years ago mothers didn't work like they do today. They were expected to stay home and cook and clean, but today there are different views and mothers are working which is leading to more meals being eaten out to save time.

It is shown on an average that one in four meals, including snacks, is eaten .Another reason is that take-away outlets are more available now than they were twenty years ago. It is now easier and sometimes cheaper to go out and buy dinner or lunch than it is to prepare it. These statistics are contributing to restaurants such as McDonalds to improve their menus to accommodate for people who want healthier options.
