Government bans catapults
Following various complaints received from the general public on the danger posed by catapults, the Central Government has issued a notification banning the use of catapults. The catapult was used in olden days for hunting birds and animals for food. Today it has become a plaything especially among young boys. However, it is noticed that this traditional weapon of hunting is being used irresponsibly by the youth. There are reports of the pellets used in catapults causing damages to properties like window glass panes, street lights, solar panels and also injuries to people.
Some section of the people said the ban on catapults by the Government is timely and welcomed. But it has also come under severe criticism from some sections. An activist challenging the ban claimed that the catapult is preserved by many communities in the country as a part of their culture and tradition. Citing the example of the US, where a person is free to possess a licensed gun, he said the problem is not the catapult but indisciplined children. Another person added that vehicles are not banned even though hundreds die from vehicle accidents and the government should focus more on important and pressing matters facing the country instead of passing legislations against "toys".

Newspaper Report
(Government Bans Catapults)
By Rahul Mehra, Secretary

The government announced the ban on catapults last Saturday and said that one must have a license to keep them. A catapult is a device that is used to throw objects at a high speed. For example, armies used catapults in the past time to throw heavy stones at the enemy, and on that type of aircraft carrier, it was used to help in launching aircraft. The influence of different parameters on catapult safety was studied from two aspects; the flight trajectory and CBA (carrier-based aircraft) acceleration, based on the simulation curves of catapult launch. The influence on time delay and structure vibration cannot be ignored. Hence, in the end, it was finally decided to ban catapults concerning the safety issues.
