The Titanic is sunk, with the extraordinary death toll.
The first journey of the White Star liner Titanic, the biggest ship at any point propelled, has ended in disaster.
The Titanic began her trek from Southampton to New York on Wednesday. Late on Sunday night, she struck an iceberg off the Grand Banks of Newfoundland. By remote telecommunication, she conveyed signs of misery, and several liners were sufficiently close to catch and react to the call.
White Star statement in New York, 9.35pm. Mr. Franklin stated, "I was sure today when I put forth the expression that the Titanic was resilient that the steamship was protected and that there would be no death toll. The primary unequivocal news in actuality came in the message tonight from Captain Haddock".
9.50pm. The White Star authorities now concede that probably just 675 out of 2,200 travelers on board the Titanic have been saved.
