  • Earlier specialists in the Harappan civilisation had argued that Mohenjo-daro in Pakistan was the largest among the 2,000 Harappan sites known to exist in India, Pakistan and Afghanistan. The archaeological remains at Mohenjo-daro extend around 300 hectares, making it the largest metropolis of not only the Indus valley.
  • Farming settlements began around 4000 BCE and around 3000 BCE there appeared the first signs of urbanization. By 2600 BCE, dozens of towns and cities had been established, and between 2500 and 2000 BCE the Indus Valley Civilization was at its peak.
  • Indus Valley. Around five thousand years ago, an important civilization developed on the Indus River floodplain. From about 2600 B.C. to 1700 B.C. a vast number of settlements were built on the banks of the Indus River and surrounding areas.
  • The first site noticed was Kalibangan but the first site identified as Indus-Saraswati site was Harappa. Kalibangan was noticed 40 years later as an Indus-Saraswati site.
  • Occupations/ Division of Labor The main social classes of the Indus River Valley Civilization are the Gods, Brahmins (priests and academics), Kshatryia (warriors and kings), Vaishya (merchants and landowners), Sudra (commoners, peasants, and servants), and then the Untouchables (the outcasts of the Caste system).

The Indus society was an agrarian society. The evidences of Mother Goddess, made some scholars to believe that it was a matriarchal society.

One of the main features of Indus Civilization was town planning. The towns were well planned. They were built on a uniform pattern. The streets were wide and straight and cut each other at right angles. The drainage system very excellent and hygienic. The bathrooms of every house were connected to the closed public drainage. These features of town planning shows Indus people were very hygienic and civilized.
