BRYOPHYTES are small terrestrial plants.

They do not possess true vasular tissue.

Male sex organ is called antheridium and female sex organ is called as archegonium.

They are without a distinct root system.

Bryophyta is divided into three major classes they are :-
* Hepaticae
* Anthocerotae
* Musci

HEPATICAE -

They are lower forms of bryophytes. They have an undifferentiated thallus.
Sporophytes is very simple and short lived. In some forms sporophyta is differntiated into food, seta and capsule

Eg. Riccia

ANTHOCEROTAE -

Gamerophytes is undifferentiated thallus. Rhizoids are unicelluar and unbranched. Protonemal stage is absent. Sporophyta is differentiated into foot and capsule and no seta.

Eg. Anthoceros

MUSCI -

They have a more differentiated structure than hepaticae. They are highest form of gametophyte. Rhizoids are multi-crllular and branched. Protonemal stage is present. Sporophyte is differentiated into foot, seta and capsule
