In other words, an emulsion is a special type of mixture made by combining two liquids that normally don't mix. The word emulsion comes from the Latin word meaning "to milk" (milk is one example of an emulsion of fat and water). The process of turning a liquid mixture into an emulsion is called emulsification

There are two basic types of emulsions: oil-in-water (O/W) and water-in-oil (W/O). These emulsions are exactly what they sound like, as pictured below. In every emulsion there is a continuous phase that suspends the droplets of the other element which is called the dispersed phase.

Emulsion is the most commonly used paint for interior walls and ceilings and there are three main types of finishes you need to know about. Vinyl matt emulsion gives a matt, non-shiny finish that expertly covers small imperfections on the wall or ceiling.

Emulsions are biphasic liquid systems consisting of two immiscible liquid phases. These phases are present in such as way that one phase is dispersed in the other continuous phase. Emulsions are part of a more general class of two-phase systems of matter called colloids.

Although the terms colloid and emulsion are sometimes used interchangeably, the term emulsion is used only when both the phases are in a liquid state. Examples of emulsions include mayonnaise, milk, lotions, etc
