during cooling, the particles come closer together releasing some energy

gas when cooled down becomes liquid and liquid when cooled down becomes solid, the particles in gas are the farthest apart and the particles in solid have the minimum distance as compared to gas and liquid. Liquid's particles are farther apart than solid particles but closer than gas particles.
