The chromosome in prokaryotes is present in an irregular shape structure known as the nucleoid. Most of the prokaryotes follow the mechanism of supercoiling to make a chromosome.

In prokaryotes, the circular chromosome is contained in the cytoplasm in an area called the nucleoid. In contrast, in eukaryotes, all of the cell's chromosomes are stored inside a structure called the nucleus. Each eukaryotic chromosomeis composed of DNA coiled and condensed around nuclear proteins called histones.

Most prokaryotes contain one circularchromosome. DNA communicates with the cytoplasm – so it allows direct connection to transcription and translation. Contain only one copy of the gene (haploid). Non-essential genes are stored outside of chromosome – in plasmids.
