Protected areas of India in total cover 156,700 Sq Kilometres or 60,500 Sq Miles, approximately 4.95% of the total surface area of the country. National Parks, Wildlife Sanctuaries, Biosphere Reserves, Reserved and Protected Forests, Conservation and Community Reserves, Village and Panchayat Forests, Private Protected and Conservation areas together comprise the total area under conservation. These are covered under the guidelines of IUCN or International Union for Conservation of Nature. The Ministry of Environment , Forests and Climate is responsible for looking after this domain, which ensures taking proper care of maintaining proper ecological balance, sustaining a status quo or improvement of the biosphere and protection of tribal groups, flora and fauna of the different regions.
