The northen mountain range of India, or the Himalayan Range consists of three parallel ranges, distinguished from each other on the basis of their heights.

The Himadri :- Also known as the Greater Himalayas or the Inner Himalayas, is so called because of snow covering it up throughout the year. It consists some of the world's highest peaks, namely Mt. Everest, Godwin Austen, Nanga Parbat, Mansalu etcetera. Rivers namely Sharda, Ghagra, Kosi and Gandak originate from this range.

The Himachal :- The Middle or the Lesser Himalayas lies to the south of the Himadri. The flat bottomed longitudinal valleys, or doons lie in this range. Not only it covers a vast vegetative region, but also this range is also a home for a number of hill stations, say, Nainital, Chakrata and Chail.

The Shiwalik :- Deprived of its continuity, the Outer Himalayas have an average elevation of about 1000 meters above sea level.
