Ideas Proposed by Philosophers through their Books

  • John Locke, in his "Two Treaties Oo Government" criticized the concept of the absolute rights given to the monarch. He also didn't like the fact that they were given special privileges .

  • Rousseau in his book "The Social Contract" proposed a form of government where there is a social contract between the people and their representatives.

  • Montesque in his book " The Spirit of Laws" stressed the concept of seperation of powers between the Legislative, the Executive and the Judiciary.

These ideas were spread to people through books, pamphlets and newspapers. With the news that Louis 16 was going to increase the taxes the people got agitated and protests broke out.
