CHARACTERS:MR.EASTON:In O. Henry’s short story “Hearts and Hands”, Mr. Easton is presented as a handsomeyoung man with a bold and frank manner. He previously used to live in Washington butlater shifted to the West for a better way of living. But in pursuit of more money, heindulged himself in some criminal activities. Now he was being taken to the Leavenworthprison for seven years of imprisonment for counterfeiting. So, it is evident that he isquite ambitious and reckless. LikeMiss Fairchild, he is also unwise and at a moralcorruption, ready to do anything to earn more money.you know it takes money to keep steps with our crowd in Washington. On the other hand, we see a positive side of his character too in the form of thefrankness in his behavior.MARSHALL:As the author presents the character in the first paragraph of the story, the unnamedmarshal is a ruffled, glum-faced person, heavily built and roughly dressed. Thisappearance apparently makes him less likable. So it is rather easy for someone to takehim as the convict handcuffed with the marshal. Introducing such a character makes O.Henry’s job easy to convince the readers that he is the convict and to bring the twist atthe end. Now, having read the entire story, the readers know that the second man wasnot really the convict, but the marshal. It is only at the very last sentence of the storythat we know his real identity when another passenger says “Say–did you ever know anofficer to handcuff a prisoner to his right hand?” So, drawing a character sketch of theman won’t be possible if one doesn’t read till the end. Now, to come to the real discussion about the marshal’s character traits, the manwas compassionate to Mr. Easton, the actual criminal. He saved Easton twice fromembarrassment. He did not even hesitate to tell a lie to the woman and to underminehimself by posing for a prisoner. This shows his humane nature and sympathy for others, even for a criminal. As a marshal people would normally think him to be rather harshand strict, but the humanity he displayed to his prisoner makes him a unique andextraordinary character.
The marshal shows his great presence of mind and common sense by quickly choosingto tell a lie to Miss Fairchild when the situation is getting complicated. Again, when thewoman insists that she too wants to live in the West, the marshal senses theembarrassment of Mr. Easton. Then he quickly suggests that he should get a smokeimmediately and saves his prisoner again. From the marshal’s use of words while talking to Miss Fairchild, we see him asa humble man and respectful to others, especially to the women. So, to conclude, the character of the marshal has been presented as a good-naturedman, humble and mature, helpful and sympathetic, with his physical and mental abilityto act according to the situationMRS FAIRCHILD:In the story “Hearts and Hands” Ms. Fairchild is depicted as an outwardlysophisticated and luxurious pretty young lady. She has elegant taste and a habit oftravelling by train. Her initial glance of ‘distant, swift disinterest’ in the two men is proof
