Political Cause: The expansionist policies of the British made all the Indians rulers suspicious of their intention.

Military Cause: The chances of promotion of Indians in the army were also very limited. They could not rise beyond the level of a subedar.

Immediate Cause: In 1856,the Enfield rifle was introduced in India. The cartridges of the rifle were smeared with grease and covers with caps,which had to beaten off before use. The sepoys believed that the grease was made from the fat of animals that would hurt both the religious sentiments of Hindus and Muslim. So they refused to use them.
