With potato, the situation is somewhat different, but that does not change much the point of the story. A huge proportion of potato cultivars are sterile or almost sterile, so potato does not reproduce efficiently through sexual reproduction. Vegetative reproduction, through tubers, is the main way of reproduction for a large majority of potato cultivars. However, plants that sprout from tubers of transgenic potato will have the same genotype and thus will be transgenic too. If a transgenic tuber remains in the ground after harvest, it might sprout there in the next season and if, for instance, you use the same area for planting non-transgenic potato during the next season, you might mistake transgenic tubers for non-transgenic, opening the door to uncontrollable spreading of transgenic potato. Therefore, planting transgenic potato in the field has to be under extremely strict control if you want to avoid invasion... Even if the cultivar in question is sterile.
