Explanation:

A base can be defined as a substance capable of releasing one or more OH- ions in aqueous solution. They are bitter in taste and soapy in touch. A base which completely ionizes in water and thus produces a large amount of hydroxide ions(OH- ions ) is called a Strong Base / Strong Alkali.

Substances which are soapy to touch and are bitter in taste are called bases.

Chemical nature of bases is basic.

The uses of bases are -

  • Calcium hydroxide is used as an ingredient in whitewash, neutralizing acidic soil, in making bleaching powder and in softening of hard water.
  • Magnesium hydroxide also known as milk of magnesia is used as an antacid.
  • Sodium hydroxide also known as caustic soda is used in manufacture of soaps, paper and textile.
  • Aluminium hydroxide is used as a foaming agent in fire extinguishers
  • Ammonium hydroxide is used in household cleaners and in fertilizers
  • Sodium carbonate along with sulphuric acid is used in fire extinguisher.
