In the medieval period, nobles usually had control over a certain area of land the agricultural production, hunting land etc. , and ruled over the people who lived there. They had knights who provided military service to them. The nobles swore loyalty to the king, and had to provide warriors and arms when he called for them. and in return got his support and were given land, castles etc. won in battle, and could give them extra help if needed. The monarch was above them but needed their support, and if a group of nobles rebelled, they might give support to a rival and the king could be overthrown.
