The simmering discontent against the British led to a great revolt in 1857. This revolt shook the British rule in India to its foundation

Many sepoys (soldier), farmers and peasants were dissatisfied with British rule. Sepoys rushed from Meerut to Delhi and asked Bahadur Shah Zafar to be their leader. This massive rebellion spread into the whole country. This was the first rebellion took in India. British passed many laws and got reinforcements from England to stop the rebellion. After 2-3 years, British controlled the country again but can't continue to rule with same policies.
