Write a paragraph about discipline

If I were going to write a paragraph about discipline, I would begin with “prewriting,” the stuff I do before I write. Sometimes, I brainstorm—writing everything down that comes to my mind about discipline. I would make myself write for at least ten minutes. It doesn’t matter whether you write in sentences, phrases, or write questions and answers—just put down everything that comes to mind. Don’t judge whether something is good or bad, just keep writing, listing, or asking questions about “discipline” Everything you think goes on paper. That’s one way to “pre-write.” Then rest a bit.

Secondly, I would go back through the stuff I had written, and circle anything that interested me, made me curious, or surprised me. You are doing “MESEARCH,” looking at what you know about discipline. Looking at those things, decide on a single idea that you are more interested in, or that seems more important than the others. Write that in a single sentence.

Paragraphs begin with a sentence that announces what the paragraph is about. The big idea. This is your topic sentence, yourfocus. Maybe it would say something like this:

“It doesn’t matter what we are trying to do; doing it well requires discipline.”

Next, we need to convince the reader that this is true. One thing that helps convince people is giving an example. An example may be a very, very short story about a time when you had to discipline yourself. Tell that story. When did it happen? How old were you? Where were you? What was the conflict or situation? Were others involved? What happened (exactly)? What was the outcome?

There…now you have a rough draft of a narrative paragraph, a paragraph that tells a short, short story, and makes a point.

NOW take some time away from what you have written, at least an hour or two—a day or two would be better. Go back to your narrative, REWRITE the entire paragraph, using your first draft kind of as a guide. If you have stayed away for a while, new words and thoughts will arise as you write. Feel free to use those rather than your first words, (if you like them better). This is called revision…you are revisiting your thoughts and subject.

I would do what I’ve mentioned here two or three times-until I was pleased with what I had said to my readers, believing that I had given them good information on the subject.

Finally, I would proof read my paragraph ALOUD. You will probably find places that are rough and make you stumble. Make changes to those places. You want to make yourself absolutely clear. You must also make sure there no mechanical errors, such as missing commas, incomplete sentences, or spelling errors.

Your done. Hope this helps.
