Puhar (also known as Poompuhar) is a town in the Nagapattinam district in the southern Indian state of Tamil Nadu.[1] It was once a flourishing ancient port city known as Kaveri poompattinam, which for a while served as the capital of the Early Chola kings in Tamilakam. Puhar is located near the end point of the Kaveri river, aside the sea coast. It is mentioned in the Periplus of the Erythraean Sea.

It is the place, the popular, where silk merchants and grain traders set sail for the Far East, Greece, and Egypt, as reported by archaeologists. Submarine excavations and studies by historians reported that Poompuhar grew into a big city during the reign of Karikal Cholan, who was the second-century Chola king who established trade ties with China, Arabia, and the Roman Empire.
Some marine archaeology was done at Poompuhar, of present Kaveri poompattinam. Evidence was found that it was a big port during 3rd century B.C.
