Monsoon is a necessity in our part of the world, but it can be quite distressful at times too. Once in July this year, we had torrential rain over a day and a half. It really poured over the entire city. I live in a low-lying area on the eastern fringes of Kolkata. Our locality was completely flooded and the problem was compounded for people who live on the ground floor, like we do. For nearly three days we were marooned, missing school, college and office. Transport and municipal services were thrown out of gear. We lived on dry foodstuff that was available at home. With waste-high water in the house, routine household activities like cooking and cleaning were a distant dream. Thankfully, as our old beds are higher than the normal ones one is familiar with today, we managed to keep ourselves dry by the general standards prevailing in the locality. The power-cuts added to our woes and the mosquitoes took advantage of the situation. The local population constantly prayed to God for improvement in the weather and receding of the water level. Eventually, all of us heaved a sigh of relief when things got better on the third day, thanks to the untiring efforts of the fire brigade, NDRF and the electricity office personnel, not to forget the weather Gods who took pity on us and made the clouds drift away.
