Just as every picture has two sides, the result day is also a day of happiness and joy on the one hand and a day of sadness and disappointment on the other. It is a day on which we are judged and awarded according to our performance in exams, a day of pride for the parents of outstanding students and a day of disappointment for parents whose children did not perform according to their expectations in the exams.

Surely it is the most exciting day of the academic year, the day on which the heart beats fastest. Similarly these moments came into my life on March 29, 2010 when I lost my sleep, felt very afraid, yet excited — it was my annual result day of class eight.

While I was nervous because of my result, I was also nervous because of my skit which I was going to perform that day and I had written it myself, titled Emperor Akbar in the 21st Century. It was a comedy skit and I was playing the main role of King Akbar, and the special part of the skit was our dressing, which was not at all easy. All of the characters had to wear dresses that were embroidered and wear the necklaces and turbans.

ARTICLE CONTINUES AFTER AD

The performance went well and our efforts were appreciated by all parents, teachers and the chief guest.

After this came the most exciting part of the programme — the announcement of the results and everyone was praying for good grades and positions. The result of Class Eight was to be announced in the end so we had to wait for a long time. At last the moment that we had impatiently waited for arrived.

I heard the name of my friend being called out as the third position holder. Then came the announcement for the second position and I was in a daze when my name was announced as the first position holder!

With shaky legs and amidst lots of applaud, I walked up the stage to receive my trophy and slash. As I turned to face the audience, I could not see clearly due to watery eyes as everyone present in the ceremony appreciated me. It was a great moment of pride for me and my parents.

I have to say that this would not have happened without the hard work, encouragements and prayers of my parents, but most of all, it is a bounty from the Almighty Ram for which I am very thankful.

The annual report is a bulky document, sometimes running into 180-200 pages. Experts say one should read the full document. “Investors should go through each line of the annual report,” says Daljeet S. Kohli, Director & Head of Research, India Nivesh Securities. To begin with, focus on the first part of the report. “Most companies give financial highlights of the past 10 years. While these numbers may not be of much use to institutional investors, they are useful for retail investors to understand how the company has grown in the past,” says Anand Shah, Deputy CEO & CIO, BNP Paribas Mutual Fund. “Read the notice because it gives lot of information and sets the agenda of the annual general meeting. Investors should also read the chairman’s speech that gives a clear vision about the future and the directors’ report (along with management discussion and analysis) which explains current business structure before going to the net profit figure,” says Deven Choksey, Managing Director, KR Choksey Securities.
