Explanation:

First off all a definition of role play is required. According to Bruce and Meggit (2002) “role play occurs when pretend symbols are used together. For example when a child pretends to drive a car to the shops and unlocks the car door with a pretend clothes peg key, sits on a box (the car seat) and turns the wheel (a dinner plate).” However I believe there is more to it than that. Role play is a form of drama and the Greek word for drama means living through. The children have to use make believe to create the setting for their drama and this setting creates a safe world for the child to try out new situations. According to Aristotle this is a “metaxis”-the real world and the fantasy world of drama coming together in the mind of the player (the child) (Whitebread 1996).
