Diwali
Diwali is one of the most important festivals of India. It is a festival of lights and joy. It marks the victory of good over evil. Rama defeated Ravana, the evil king of Lanka. Rama returned to Ayodhya and became a great and ideal king.
Houses, shops etc. are whitewashed, newly painted and decorated for the festival. People wear their best colourful clothes. They exchange sweets and greetings and give gifts to one another. There are electric, candle and mud lamps in rows and rows. At night there are fire works and Goddess Lakshmi is worshipped.
People spend freely in the festive mood. They buy new clothes, jewellery, sweets, utensils etc. Diwali also marks the coming of the winter season.
