They think about you from the day your parents come together under nuptial bliss, sometimes even before, and pray to wake up another day to see you come into this world.
This grandparents-grandchildren relationship is symbolic of life coming full circle. Having lived through their childhood, of their days of carefree fun and innocence, through their days of serious business, adulthood and now in their 'oldhood', grandparents relive their childhood with their grandchildren.
“Old age is a like a second childhood,” admits Dharmesh Desai, as he lively defends himself against accusations of spoiling his grandchildren with overdoses of pampering. And dare anyone say that his 17-year-old grandson is spoilt. “What bothers you if he wants to sport long hair, something you can't on your balding head!” he once snapped at his son for reprimanding grandson Abhijeet. “He would even coax my dadi to oil my hair while we all watched TV together and have fun watching my dad's expressions instead of the TV screen,” says Abhijeet. Now that’s some ‘grand’ mischief at 74.
This relationship between the young at age and young at heart astonishingly even defies the devils of generation gap as most grandchildren consider their grandparents as friends.
Their lively spirit gives youngsters the much-needed boost to face their competitive lives. It’s all about adding colour to the lighter side of life. Something this nuclear family generation is definitely missing.
