The Pratihara clan belonged to the great and powerful Gurjara-Pratihara dynasty that ruled almost the entire North India from the middle of 7th century to the 11th century. Their first establishment was in Ujjain. Some of the important Pratihara rulers were Nagabhata I, Nagabhata II, Ramabhadra, Mihira Bhoja and Mahendrapala. One of the major invasions made by them was the conquest of Kannauj. The Pratiharas made contributions to various forms of architecture such as carved panels and sculptures. Their temples had an open pavilion style construction. One major reason for their decline was the Turkic attacks that they had to deal with from the West, the Pala combats from the East and the Rashtrakuta dynasty confrontations from the South.
