Everything in this world has a price. This is true about our comforts too. Plastic has made our lives very comfortable indeed. It is so light and yet so strong. No surprise that it became immediately popular. Then plastic came in shape of polythene bags. It changed our shopping habits. Some fifty years ago, people could not think of going to market without a plastic bag. However, very soon it became evident, that plastic is a curse. It cannot die i.e it is non-biodegradable. When it becomes useless, it becomes a nuisance. It will not rot and therefore will not disappear easily. If you burn it, it causes air pollution. If you dump it, it pollutes the environment. When it finds its way into the drains, it chokes them. If an animal eats it, it causes the animal's death. It contains toxic chemicals which can go into the food kept in plastic bags. It is high time that we gave up the use of plastic bags and used bags made of paper, cloth or jute.
