⏭️Each one of us has a value that we live by. Some live by leadership and patience, while others live by the sole thought of danger. I have a theory that the values by which we live by are based off of our personalities and the environment in which surrounds us. I am probably more on the quiet range of the personality scale, however I am quite opinionated and I do not like to lose. I have also grown up my entire life with an overly competitive brother who has a personality similar to mine. This clash, as you may have guessed, normally ends up with the age old struggle for power and superiority. As I have grown older, I have slowly come to the realization that neither my brother nor I will always get the upper hand.

⏭️Around two years or so ago, my brother was given a video game that he had been dying to have. My parents, you have to understand, are not the people who just go out and buy gifts. So why did my brother receive such an out of the blue gift, it’s because he got the model student award of course. This is where the jealousy and power struggle begin to kick in. Just a week earlier I had received straight A’s on my report card and, in my opinion, good grades raised high above a model student award. At the time, I felt that with the wrong move, fire would shoot out of my ears. I was outraged beyond words! I marched straight over to my parents and told them exactly how I felt; luckily they understood where I was coming from. A smirk wiped across my face I remember, I had beaten my brother, the smile was short lived. I was simply told that sometimes life isn’t always fair and that sometimes I just have to let everything play out in the end.

⏭️Life is not always fair. I pondered this phrase for weeks after that incident. It opened my eyes and I understood that no matter who you are or where you come from, sometimes you are going to get stuck with the shorter straw. It is a good value to live by so that I do not get tripped up by the non-significant things in life. Today this value may only apply to my silly sibling cat fights, but later in life I may have to bite my tongue when something in the office seems unfair. Life does go on though, and in the end, our reward scorecards will have equal tallies.

Looking back on that day when I was first struck with life’s unfairness’s; I see my younger self and chuckle. I had gotten so worked up over a video game! I still have some hard feelings towards that day the lived years ago. Sure, I think my grades should have over shadowed my brother’s award; however life is not lived for the sole idea of equality but for patience and self control. I will continue to live my life, fighting with my brother, getting upset about the littlest things, and having a great time. One thing that will stick with me through it all though, is a five-word value that we can all use, life is not always fair. Just remember, even when we end up with the lower hand, there will always be another round. This I believe.
