. We visited Liwonde National Park for
the first time in life. We departed Phalombe for Liwonde at around seven in the morning hours
and arrived at the Park at around half ten. Lucky enough we were warmly welcomed at the main
gate by the tour guiders who gave us some rules and regulations which they follow like: Do not
attack any animal, do not get out of the car when travelling to properly see an animal and do not
make loud noise around the premises of the park. We saw so many animals in the park though
some were far and others running away from us. Some examples of the animals which we saw
were like: Snakes, crocodiles, Rhino, waterbucks, antelopes, warthogs, monkeys, impala and
different species of birds and trees. To us it was our first time to physically see these animals and
it will be very difficult for us to forget whatever we learnt from seeing these animals.
The most famous animal in this park is elephant. It is the biggest animal. Male elephant is bigger
than female. Their lifespan is between seventy and hundred years and its gestation period is two
years. This animal has short sight but good hearing ability due to large pinna and good smelling
ability due to presence of large nostrils.
Waterbucks are animals that looks like a donkey and has more hairs. The male is bigger than the
female and this female has a white ring at the back and its small horns point forward and the
male has no ring but long horns that point at the back.
In summary the trip was successful in the way that we learnt a lot of things which we never
thought to see with our eyes. Besides visiting the National park we also learnt some other more
things on our way when travelling to the Park because most of Ekari students never went out of
the Phalombe district so it was first time for some to come to see Zomba city and Liwonde town
as well. We were also privileged to visit the Shire river barrage where generation of electricity is
done. This was like a dream to almost all of us to see Shire River and its barrage for the first
time.
We therefore would want to thank Ekari foundation for making this trip possible and all the
drinks which were served to us during the trip. We are looking forward to a lot more trips in
future. May God bless Ekari foundation and its Management.
