Two-Day Strike by Taxi Union
by NT reporter
Panaji:
The All Goa Taxi Union called for a two-day state-wide strike on 17th and 18th January, 2019 because of a hike in petrol prices in the state. In an exclusive interview with our Navhind Times correspondent, he president of the union, Mr. Abhinav Sawant said that in the previous election the government had promised a waive of 20% on petrol prices for the taxi driver all over the state but that promise was just an eye wash by the present government. He said that in spite of repeated letters to the chief minister, their pleas were ignore. "We wanted to make it visible now that we are very unhappy", said Mr. Sawant.
This is the second time in 5 months that the taxi drivers union is going on strike and this time the union threatened that unless their demands were fulfilled they will not relent. This being peak tourist season, hoards of tourists are finding it difficult to navigate from place to place. Anticipating their inconvenience, the Kadamba services have increased their trips from the airport to the rest of the state. It is a tactic by the union to put pressure on the government.
2 Day strike report
From Monday 21st January to 23rd January 2019, a city-wise strike has been called by the Taxi Union to protest against the hike in the petrol prices.
The prices are so high that running the cab is becoming a complete loss for the taxi owners and drivers.
A uniformed effort and request are made so the prices can be lowered back to its general level.
We request all the taxi owners and drivers in the city to participate with us and voice their protests too.
Thank You.
