It was a typical winter's day in Kolkata. Our school in Park Circus was due to close for the winter vacation in a couple of days. A blanket of smog had engulfed the area and the visibility was low by any standard. It was around 7:45 A.M. and we were gently moving along Syed Amir Ali Avenue in our rickety school bus.
As we approached the five-point crossing in Park Circus, our bus stopped moving and we were caught in a traffic jam. We enquired about the problem from the bystanders and were told there was an accident. A traffic sergeant could be seen copiously making notes in his diary.
A few of us got down from the school bus and gingerly approached the site of the accident. Soon we could see a bus, heavily dented in front. Immediately in front was a truck, slightly damaged at the back. We approached the police officer to find out what was wrong. He narrated the incident to us in his own unique way, making it obvious incidents like these were matters of routine for him.
Apparently, there was an accident a few minutes before our arrival.The truck had stopped when the traffic light turned red. But, there was a break failure in the bus and it rammed into the truck from behind. The saving grace was the slow traffic due to the surrounding smog! Hence, the accident caused no injury or death.
Soon after our investigation of the accident we saw a towing crane arrive and the bus towed away, most likely to the local police station. The truck was allowed to leave the spot on its own. Traffic was cleared for us and off we went to school.
