Location and History
Sivasagar, named after its ruler, Shiva Singha is a city of great historical importance in Assam. Situated in the North eastern part of India, the city attracts a lot of tourists every year. It may be called pride of Assam due to its rich cultural heritage and historical importance. Once it was the capital of te great Ahom kingdom, the brave dynasty who ruled Assam for glorious six hundred years, before the onset of the British rule in India. The ancient name of Sivasagar is Rangpur; this name suggests about the place that it is a place of joy and happiness.
How to go to Sivasagar
The closest airports to reach Sivasagar are Jorhat and Dibrugarh, located at 40 kilometers and 80 kilometers respectively from the main city of Sivasagar. Both these airports are well connected with major cities of India like Bangalore, Delhi, Calcutta and Mumbai.
This city has a railway station also. The Dibrugarh - Yesvantpur Express connects Sivasagar railway station. Another closest rail station is Simaluguri located at 16 kolometres away from Sivasagar. There are regular bus services that run from these railway stations to Sivasagar city. It is half an hour's distance between Simaluguri and Sivasagar which gives very easy accessibility to the city by railways as well.

The historical Joyasagar Tank of Sivasagar
One of the important tourist attractions of the place is the beautiful Joyasagar tank. It covers 318 acre area. It is said that the lake is the largest manmade lake within the country. The tank was constructed by Swargadeo (the holy king) Rudra Singha on the memory of his mother Sati Joymoti. Joymoti sacrificed her life for her husband Gadadhar Singha who had absconded himself to save Assam from the cruel ruler, Lora Roja (the Child king). Joysagar tank is surrounded by five significant temples, namely Vishnu temple, Devi temple, Shiva Temple, Ghanashyam Temple and Joy Doul. The blue colored water of the lake with different types of migratory birds enhances the scenic beauty of the place. Among these temples Joy Doul is famous for its history. It was constructed during the reign of famous Ahom king Rudra Singha to commemorate his mother Joy moti. The unique architecture of this temple is very attractive.
