KOLKATA, February 24 : A heavy downpour over the past 48 hours has paralysed normal life in Kolkata. It has caused waterlogging in different parts of Central Kolkata and a few parts of North and South Kolkata. The roads have become submerged under water. Daily commuters, especially office - goers and school children, are finding it difficult to wade through knee - deep water and reach their destinations. Most of the vehicles have stopped playing. The people on the roads are suffering from great hardship as the few buses plying are over - crowded. The Kolkata Municipal Corporation has pressed many water pumps into service to remove the water. According to Alipore Weather Department, the rainfall is the result of a depression in the Bay of Bengal. It has predicted more rains in the next few days.

KOLKATA: A spell of torrential rain, coupled with a high tide in the Hooghly , served the city a double whammy of flooding major roads and bringing traffic to a grinding halt.

It was around 11.30am when the downpour took the city by surprise, virtually blinding motorists and sending pedestrians scamper for cover. Going by the civic pumping stations records across the city , the northern part received much higher rainfall than the south, with Ultadanga logging 105mm --the underpass got flooded --Manicktala 80mm and Belgachhia 85mm. Jodhpur Park, however, recorded 29mm rain only. In Salt Lake, it poured so heavily that the Kund area at City Centre went under water.
