Explanation:

Built by Shivaji in 1656, Pratapgarh Fort is a maze of beautiful ponds, chambers and long dark paths. The responsibility of the construction of the fort was given to Moropant Pingale - minister of Shivaji and Hiroji Indulkar - architect. It is the same place where Shivaji defeated Afzal Khan - commander of the Bijapur Sultanate. At present, there exists Afzal Khan's Tomb at the place where he was defeated. To commemorate this historic event, an equestrian statue of Chhatrapati Shivaji was built at the top of the fort in the year 1959.

The rare feature of the fort is the double-line fortification that divides it into two parts – upper fort and lower fort. The former is built across the northern and western side of the hill and the latter on the southern and eastern side. Besides, there is a temple of Bhavani Goddess on the eastern side of the lower fort, where Shivaji was rewarded with a shining sword.

Heritage and nature lovers can spend hours exploring this splendid place surrounded by luxuriant greenery. Visitors can also enjoy spectacular views of the wide Konkan Coast from the fort as it is at a height of 900 metres above sea level
