The Indian deserts - The Great Indian Desert or the Thar Desert is located in western Rajasthan. It is a sandy plain receiving rainfall as low as 150mm in a year. THE vegetation cover in the region is extremely scarce. Some small streams appear during the rainy season but they quickly disappear into the sand. Luni is the only large river in this region. Barchan, crescent shaped sand dunes are prominent feature of the desert. The central highlands - The portion of the Peninsular Plateau that is located to the north of the Narmada River covering a huge part of the Malwa Plateau is known as the Central Highlands. They are wider in the west but narrower in the east. On the northwest of the Central Highlands lies the Aravalli Range and on the south lies the Vindhyas range. The east extension of the Central Highlands is known as the Bundelkhand and Baghelkhand. The Chotanagpur Plateau on further east of the Central Highlands is drained by river Damodar.
